Why Is My Data Finishing So Fast? Find What Your Phone Is Spending It On

The day before you were set to run out of your data bundle, you haven’t even used your phone that much yet. Your phone is able to partially answer the question of why your data has disappeared so quickly, because each app has its own individual usage tracking features. According to the NCC’s Smart Data Management guidance, your data goes to apps that have auto-updates enabled, are used for social media, stream media content or auto-sync in the background.

However, you will find a major caveat to this line of thought. The usage statistics recorded by your device and your carrier are two different reporting systems, and just because there is a discrepancy in these numbers does not mean your carrier is misleading you. Before making any changes to how your phone functions, ensure that you check to see which data usage numbers you can trust, because disabling the wrong feature may delay updates, backups or messages that you need to receive regularly.

Why Your Phone and Your Network Disagree on Your Data Balance

Your device will keep count of its own usage, and so, depending on the date the app got its last update, you may have different values for how many gigabytes were used by your phone vs. your network. If you see a difference, make sure to verify both your SIM card and that you’re using the same date. A discrepancy by itself does not prove someone is stealing your data.

Both Google and Apple acknowledge publicly that their respective platforms keep separate measurements for usage. On the Pixel, for example, its Settings option displays how much data has been consumed. Carriers’ measurements may be different; consult your carrier to get the most accurate measurement of how much data you’ve used and your data limits. Apple’s page on mobile data usage includes a more detailed explanation of how to track your data usage accurately. Pixel data usage help.

In most cases, mismatches are purely a matter of time periods. Pixels allow you to choose a time frame for the app to report on. With an iPhone, the current period metric shows total usage since the last time the user pressed Reset Statistics (which may be months ago). For example, if you activated your MTN, Airtel, or Glo bundles last week, and your phone’s data count began counting in March, then they are both measuring data from different periods. Users of dual-SIM devices may have even more trouble determining their actual data usage. Apple notes that the data usage displayed for an iPhone is only for that device’s current mobile data number; if another line was being used, that line’s usage won’t show up.

Any external application that monitors a user’s data consumption cannot provide conclusive proof of actual usage; these applications typically provide users with estimates, and are not reliable for tracking data use accurately based on what was recorded. The NCC’s data depletion FAQ warns that free usage-monitoring apps give approximations and may record amounts well away from your actual usage.

What the audits do and don’t settle

Suspicion about the networks is a reality and exists in public. For instance, on one of the Nairaland Threads dated March 2025, it was stated by the initial poster who claims to have had 5GB used up before the end of day for all of their usage on X, Facebook and WhatsApp that they believed the networks were stealing data without customers being aware of it. This is one person’s opinion about what has happened – not data that can be quantified. However, based on actual records from the phone apps and the service providers, it is possible to assess whether that person was correct.

MTN has gone public in an effort to try and address the concerns of customers about how the networks manage their data – they held a “Data on Trial” event on 06/06/2026 in London, and Neusroom has reported that KPMG was engaged by MTN to conduct a review covering the period from 01/04/2026 onward and has established that the data that was recorded on the MTN’s Data Usage Portal was the same as what customers had been charged. Be careful of how to interpret this information, as it is not intended to provide assurance that the information is accurate, as it only relates to the MTN’s own portal and billing records, and the full report and review process have not yet been published and can only state what is happening with customers’ bundles.

The NCC views this as a formal complaint type. In their Business Rules on Quality of Service 2026, they include “Data Depletion” as one of the billing complaint types.

If the numbers still don’t add up (Nigeria, checked 29/09/2026)

To ensure you’re matching the same SIM cards with the same dates, the next step is to reach out to your carrier and request a ticket ID so you can better manage your case. Record the date of your first contact with your carrier and make sure to retain any documentation for your records. When using the online complaint form on the NCC website, you will be asked to select “Yes” or “No” to indicate if you contacted your carrier before submitting a complaint, and you will also need to provide the date you first contacted your carrier and your ticket ID. The NCC’s contact page refers submitters of complaints to the online complaint form. It’s important that you keep all of your records in order because no one can guarantee a refund or provide you with an estimated timeline for processing your complaint. As a precaution, avoid publicly posting screenshots that display your phone number, ticket ID, or account information.

How to See Exactly Which Apps Are Using Your Mobile Data

Your device keeps track of which applications have utilized your mobile data, however, viewing that information does not alleviate any issues related to it. Therefore, it is imperative that you view this information prior to making any adjustments in the mobile data settings so that you know what application you are referencing.

On a Google Pixel

Google’s steps for checking data usage apply to Pixel phones, and some only work on Android 8.0 and later:

  1. Open Settings and tap Network & internet, then SIMs. Your total mobile data use shows at the top.
  2. Tap App data usage to see the graph.
  3. Tap the down arrow to pick the time period that matches your current bundle.
  4. Look below the graph for how much each app used.

It is essential to note that Samsung, Tecno, Infinix, and all other Android devices place this information within different sections of the mobile data menu. Google also states that some devices that are running modified versions of Android will require specific instructions from the manufacturer. Type “data usage” into the search section of the Settings menu on those devices to locate the equivalent screen.

On an iPhone

Apple’s instructions cover this, and the menu is called Mobile Data or Cellular depending on your region:

  1. Open Settings and tap Mobile Data (or Cellular).
  2. Scroll down to the list of apps and the amount each one used.
  3. Tap System Services to see data used by the iPhone’s own services. You can’t switch these off one by one.

Do not use the Reset Statistics function; this option will delete the data that may be necessary to establish a claim with your telecommunications provider or the NCC.

Reading the list honestly

The information displayed on this screen reflects what your device records; your provider’s bill reflects what they charge you. You should check three things before exiting the screen: the time frame for which the data is recorded; the SIM card to which the data applies; and the top two or three apps listed within the usage statistics. If you see YouTube, TikTok, or other video streaming services listed among the top entries, then your mobile data has been used primarily for viewing those videos. If you see other apps listed there as a top entry, such as a photo or a downloadable software website, the majority of your mobile data was utilized by a third-party app running in the background of your device as is described in the next section.

Neither Google nor Apple guarantee that all phones will separate the total used for each application into usage while the application was active and usage when the application was inactive or in the background, so it is important not to expect that separation for every mobile device. Usage related to devices that shared their connection as a wireless hotspot may not appear in a typified listing as an application on your mobile phone’s usage report.

The Background Settings That Secretly Drain Your Bundle

Some of the reasons your mobile data is disappearing even when you aren’t actively using your phone include things like back-ups, updates, chat/media/other content and certain features associated with iPhone that utilize mobile data without prompting you each time to use it.

For example, a Nairaland contributor described exactly this. He used a data control app that stopped functioning, at which point the apps running in the background he had downloaded were performing updates on his mobile data. There are indicators in his account reflecting this condition. The information below reflects what you should examine in order to ascertain your background usage of mobile data.

Updates and photo backups

You may also wish to check your Google Play Store app. Your Google Play Store app will request permission to download updates over Wi-Fi or your mobile data plan as part of your settings on the Google Play Store app. In some instances, in particular when a large update is performed on an app over your mobile data, this will consume a good portion of your mobile data plan’s monthly allocation. Additionally, Google states that they will also update applications, regardless of how you have set your application update preferences, to fix critical security vulnerabilities. Google Play’s help page lists “Update all apps over Wi-Fi or mobile data” as one of the choices.

Another major user of mobile data is video/photo back-ups. For Google Photos, you will upload your high-resolution videos and photographs automatically over your mobile data plan, unless you turn off this setting. The same applies to Apple Products. According to Apple’s website, they warn you that selecting their “Automatically Sync Now” option will often result in you using higher amounts of mobile data if you have selected to use your mobile data for photo back-ups. iCloud Photos will do this automatically.

Chat media and shared connections

Lastly, the WhatsApp help centre confirms that the WhatsApp application has the option to automatically download videos, photos, voice and document messages using your mobile data plan and that when you are a member of a WhatsApp group and receive a forwarded video, you are charged for it, regardless of whether you watched it.

A hotspot allows all devices partnered to share your data bundle with one another. Google’s hotspot guide supports this by providing information that your mobile data is accessible to any device connected to your hotspot, and that even if your computer is plugged into your hotspot, it can download updates using your mobile data. The NCC’s data depletion FAQ states in its FAQs about depleted data that one of the less obvious dangers that may be encountered when operating a mobile hotspot is that if someone has discovered your password, they may be stealing data through your phone’s mobile network.

iPhone settings that fall back on mobile data

When Background App Refresh is enabled, all applications that are running in the background on your iPhone check for new content. If Background App Refresh is set to use your mobile data, it will consume an available mobile data bundle through this method.

Newer iPhones include a new feature called Connectivity Assist that replaces Wi-Fi Assist. Connectivity Assist will automatically switch your iPhone to a mobile data connection when Wi-Fi connectivity becomes unavailable, busy, or weak. According to Apple, you may face an increase in mobile data consumption when “Connectivity Assist” is switched on. If Wi-Fi Assist was already enabled before the update, Connectivity Assist will be automatically enabled.

For 5G networks, Apple has added a new feature called “Allow More Data on 5G” to the 5G settings. The “Allow More Data on 5G” feature will allow you to download iOS updates, create Automatic iCloud Backups, and stream high quality videos over mobile data. Many unlimited plans will have this feature automatically enabled. The “Allow More Data on 5G” feature is based on one setting and is not related to 5G capability.

How to Stop Apps from Using Data in the Background (Android & iPhone)

If you wish to stop applications from using mobile data when they are not in use, you don’t have to turn off your mobile data; instead, select only one of the many different options that can help. Find the one that reflects your usage report and then leave the rest alone.

Note: Any of the limitations imposed by the app restrictions you place could delay something from being delivered. Therefore, messages could come in late, your backups could wait for Wi-Fi, and your applications’ refresh rate may not resume until you use them. So, don’t restrict any of the applications you need for immediate delivery (message or alert). Also, make sure that your images and chats are fully backed up before enforcing a limit on backing up. Do not disable automatic updates on your applications entirely.

The following map represents each company’s respective help pages, dated 29/09/2026. The legends displayed on the map may vary based on your particular device model, operating system, and geographic region. The maps do not include Tecno or Infinix because their present-day official routes through their menus cannot yet be verified.

Phone or app Where to find it What it changes Watch for
Google Pixel Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver Most apps only get background data on Wi-Fi The app you’re using can still use mobile data
Google Pixel Data Saver > Unrestricted data Lets apps you choose keep using background mobile data Add apps whose alerts you can’t afford to miss
Samsung Galaxy Settings > Connections > Data usage > Data saver Stops background mobile data Exceptions go in “Allowed to use data while Data saver is on”
Samsung Galaxy Settings > Apps > [app] > Mobile data > Allow background data usage Restricts one app only Labels vary by model
iPhone Settings > General > Background App Refresh Set to Off or Wi-Fi only Doesn’t block all background activity
iPhone Settings > Mobile Data > Mobile Data Options > Low Data Mode Pauses automatic updates, backups and iCloud Photos updates Backups wait until you’re on Wi-Fi
iPhone Settings > Mobile Data > switch next to the app The app can only use Wi-Fi Blocks the app even while you’re using it
iPhone Settings > Wi-Fi > Connectivity Assist Mobile data stops filling in for weak Wi-Fi Weak Wi-Fi may drop out more
Google Play Profile picture > Settings > Network Preferences > Auto-update apps > Update over Wi-Fi only Keeps app updates off mobile data Critical security updates may still install
Google Photos Profile picture > Photos settings > Backup > Mobile data usage Sets a daily limit; can turn off video backup over data Keep backup on and just limit it
App Store Settings > Apps > App Store Controls mobile data, app updates, in-app content and video autoplay Check each switch separately
WhatsApp Settings > Storage and data > Media auto-download Sets which media downloads automatically on mobile data Set photos, audio, video and documents separately

The most important finding from the maps is that the “Saver” modes each intentionally have gaps in them. According to Google, using Data Saver on an active Pixel will still allow you to continue using the app that you are currently using, and they can also allow you to choose exceptions for specific applications. Android’s Data Saver can limit the use of background mobile data while still allowing you to use a bundle of mobile data while viewing video through the application. On an iPhone, Apple describes Background App Refresh as allowing applications that are suspended to check for new content. This, therefore, does not entirely turn off that option, and Apple does not provide any guarantees as to how notifications from each application will respond when you check it.

Apple provides information about how to Cut Down on your background network usage, reduce the Stream Quality of video or music, as well as Pause Automatic Backups & iCloud Photos updates when using Low Data mode. If your app only operates over Wi-Fi, the best option would be to turn off the Mobile Data option associated with the specific app versus using Low Data Mode. If you are using an iPhone with Dual SIM capability, remember to select the Primary SIM first as Apple treats Low Data mode as a separate entity per line

Checking the fix without wasting data

You do not need to reset anything or spend Data on testing out your changes; instead, use your Device as you usually do for a couple of days. After that, go back into the same application report, configure it for the same type of time frame, and see if the app that showed the most Data use prior to the change now shows a reduction in Data. Place the reduction shown by your app alongside your Carrier’s balance report for those same days for comparison. If both reports demonstrate a reduction, you have demonstrated that the setting was effective. Conversely, if your Device’s data usage shows little usage, but your Carrier’s balance report continues to decrease, you will have the proper dates and amounts available for submission to your Carrier, as discussed earlier in the report.

The One Setting That Matters

The correct way to fix a fast draining bundle isn’t done with a single switch. The key screen on your phone is your per-app mobile data report, which shows how each app used your data before you do anything else. So check that screen before you make any changes and then change the appropriate setting only for the app at the top of the list. Always keep your backup and urgent alert operational. If the report on your phone and the balance of your network do not match for the same period, then a ticket with your network and an NCC complaint form should be submitted next before using another saving feature.
