ALLIANCE OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS AGAINST NEO-LIBERAL ATTACKS (ANSA)
THE SHUT DOWN OF U.I AND THE INCESSANT ATTACK ON STUDENTS’ UNIONISM; A CALL FOR MASS BASED NATIONAL ACTION.
As glaringly enough, the shameful state of learning which students are subjected to all around Nigerian campuses, is today, way beyond bearable , and has become nothing but a national attack on innocent students by the ruling class. This has, thus, left us with burning questions that make one to wonder if we still have education .While we have lamentable and porous state of living and learning conditions, just as OAU students suffer from bedbugs in the limited horrible hostels available, the same deplorable situations but in different forms are obtainable in ABU zaria, in UniJos, in UNILAG as well as other universities including the recently despotically shut down University of Ibadan. It is noteworthy here to commend the great students of the university of Ibadan who deemed it fit to protect their interests and rights in a peaceful demonstration. It is not a thing of surprise that the management of the University of Ibadan led by Prof. Idowu Olayinka has equally reacted by shutting down the university and suspending the union activities in order to clamp down the students agitations. This has always been the characterised highhandedness of school authorities. The suspension of union and forceful repression of students is condemnable. Students of the university of Ibadan should not see this as a set back in their struggle but as a matter of fact remain undaunted, the union leadership must intensify on their rigorous sensitization of the member and ensuring that the union is committed to restoring sanity to the university system. The union must recognize that its legitimacy resides in her members, the students, and not in the black and white paper of the university management. The union should join hands with other students movement across boards to take up national campaign against corruption, looting and under funding of the education sector and undemocratic management of the university system.
Again, Something is obvious that no matter how hard the ruling elite and their agents in these establishments attack, repress and victimize the oppressed in the society, it has never concealed the crisis embedded in the system, but on the contrary, it further exposes the rottenness in the system as created by the elements in the corridors of powers. These repressions are only the prelude to a looming and inevitable violent uprising by the oppressed and downtrodden in the society. It is a call for further concerted effort to liberate the society.
It is on this basis, that the students of university of Ibadan, students of OAU, LAUTECH, UNILAG, OOU, UNILORIN as well as mass of students in Nigerian universities and secondary schools should begin to unite and mobilize against the poor funding of education sector, against incessant increments in fees with no significant reflection in the welfare of students, against academic victimization of student activists and union leaders, and against looted economy which continues to render the mass of the poor vulnerable and impoverished.
