7 JAMB attempts later, she became the best graduating student

An incredible woman, Remilekun Orefunwa,
has against all odds, become the best
graduating student in the Lagos State
University.
“I almost gave up after writing UTME for
seven years.”
Remilekun tried everything to get into
University. She also applied to get into
Obafemi Awolowo University thrice, but
without success. According to her, she has
her dad and elder sister to thank for the
encouragement. While waiting to gain
admission, she started a program with the
Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria.
“I qualified as an Associate Chartered
Accountant in 2010.” Her resolve to get a
university education finally paid off in 2012.
“I eventually gained admission to study
Accounting Education here in the Lagos State
University in 2012.”
Fast forward a few years later to the 22nd of
March, 2017. Remilekun Orefunwa is the
Valedictorian and Best Graduating Student of
the 2015/2016 class by the Vice-Chancellor of
the university, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun.
She pulled this off with a CGPA of 4.74 out of
5.0.
Even more incredible is that the 29-year-old
managed to do this, while being pregnant with
her first child.
Remi was clearly the star of the show, even
though it was a convocation ceremony of
36,489 students. With 25 others graduating
with First Class Degrees too, the story of Remi
is one that will be remembered for a long
time.
Orefunwa, who is pregnant with her first
child, was declared the overall best-
graduating student by the Vice-Chancellor of
the university, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun,
during the 21st convocation of the school.
A total 36,489 students graduated with
diploma as well as first and higher degrees
during the convocation. Aside from Orefunwa,
who is a graduate of Accounting Education, 25
others emerged in the first class division.
Her advice to others?
“…never give up in the face of daunting
challenges.”
Never.
